Fiorito and Signore Among WRWBL’s Top Rookies

Jun. 26th, 2012

Donato Signore

Through the Dirtbags’ first half of the season, rookie right fielder Cristian Fiorito (Concordia College) and shortstop Donato Signore (Adelphi University) have been two of the top rookies in the Westchester/Rockland Wood Bat League. Their all out, exciting style of play has been a highlight for the New Rochelle team as they look to make the playoffs for the first time in their brief history.

The 6’5” left handed hitting Fiorito has reached base in every game he’s played this season while recording a hit in 15 of 16. He’s batting at a .415 clip in the 3rd and 4th spots in his first year with the ‘Bags. He’s also played gold glove defense in right field, possessing an extremely strong and accurate throwing arm while making numerous clutch diving catches. Cristian leads the team with 22 hits and 14 rbi’s already and has also knocked 4 doubles and a triple. He had a two home run game earlier in the season, both towering shots over the right field fence in an exciting 12-11 win at Salesian over the Lookouts. Fiorito has to be the front runner for the WRWBL rookie of the year award considering his consistent all around play and fierce competitiveness.

Dirtbag shortstop Signore is currently leading the Westchester/Rockland Wood Bat League with three home runs this season. He has rotated among the first three spots in the New Rochelle order and is 5th in the league in runs scored with 14. The infielder is hitting .347 in his first 17 games with a double and 6 stolen bases. Donato has been extremely focused on improving his all around game this summer, working on his defense at short and constantly studying opposing pitchers.

Both Fiorito and Signore always stride to get better as individuals but haven’t lost the team first attitude the Dirtbag managers look for in a player. Hopefully the two young stars will help the team make a strong playoff run in 2012.
