Dirtbags to Showcase New Faces in 2013 Season

May. 3rd, 2013

Dirtbag General Managers Jeff Sosis and Greg Valvano, along with Manager Alan Sosis, are proud to announce the additions of some fresh new faces to join the New Rochelle roster in 2013. The team has worked hard all offseason to improve the infield defense, pitching staff, and speed on the basepaths.  They believe they have added key versatile players needed to help make a run deep into the playoffs.

Splitting time between third and second base will be Fairfield University freshman Billy Martin.  Martin is a New Rochelle resident who as a high school senior in 2012 helped lead Iona Prep to a CHSAA championship by hitting .340 with 18 rbi’s.  His versatility in the infield and his bat will be an important part of the team’s success in 2013.

The team was thrilled to be able to pick up their first 18 year old high school player in the offseason when they signed shortstop Richard Slenker of Fox Lane.  Slenker is regarded by many as the top high school player in the section and has committed to play next year at Yale University.  As a junior, Slenker hit .478 in the middle of one of the top lineups in the area, smacking 3 home runs and 8 doubles.  In 44 at bats this year he’s hitting .564 with 5 doubles, a triple, and a home run.  Slenker will be counted on to hit near the top of the Dirtbag lineup and provide solid defense up the middle.

Another player the team is excited about is Franklin and Marshall freshman shortstop/second baseman Brett Poniros.  Poniros was a multi sport standout at nearby Mamaroneck High School where he played football, ice hockey and baseball.  He has very good speed and is also capable of playing the outfield.  Brett hit .354 as a junior in 2011, racking up 20 stolen bases.  He followed that up with a solid senior year, hitting .281 with 11 bags and only three errors in the infield.  Poniros will get time this summer at both second and short, while filling in in the outfield when needed.

The Dirtbags have another Fox Lane standout that will appear in the infield 2013.  Ryan Bailey is a left handed power bat who has committed to play at Monmouth University next year.  Bailey has a strong throwing arm and will see time at catcher as well as the infield corners.  This year he’s hitting .379 with a pair of doubles and a home run.  Bailey has huge power potential and the team is eager to see him continue to develop this summer.

David Manning, a junior from Eastern Nazarene College, will also suit up for the Dirtbags in 2013.  In 35 games this year, Manning hit .330 with 9 doubles and a home run.  Manning is another lethal left handed bat and will be hitting in the heart of the Dirtbag order.

The most recent addition to the infield is power hitting first baseman Jesus Jaile.  Jaile is from Hartsdale and is a junior at Mercy College.  Batting in the middle of the order for the Mavericks this year, Jesus hit .259 with  6 doubles and 11 rbi’s.  He hit 2 home runs as a sophomore and the Dirtbags will look for him to provide some pop to the lineup.

Jake McGrath is another former Fox Lane athlete who will begin his first year with the Dirtbags.  McGrath had an explosive senior season in 2011 when he hit .443 with 10 doubles, a triple, and a home run.  He also scored 36 runs and only struck out twice all year.  McGrath is a first year player at Manhattanville College.  The team will look for Jake to spend time in both center and left this year.

Rye native Jake Meyerson is coming off a very strong freshman season up at the University of Rochester.  He’s hitting .271 with 3 doubles and 5 stolen bases after becoming the team’s primary centerfielder earlier this season.  Meyerson was another multisport athlete in high school, where he was also a star football player and also lettered in track.  His senior year he hit .389 with 4 doubles, 2 triples, and a home run while swiping 12 bases.  He showcases a strong arm and will see time at all three outfield positions.

Coming back to the team after a year off is former Dirtbag ace Doug Dulin.  Dulin had a fantastic year in 2011, posting a 3.60 ERA in 40 innings with 36k’s.  He played collegiately at the College of Saint Rose, and as a senior in 2011 led all starters with a 3.64 ERA in 54.1 innings pitched.  He had an even better year as a junior, posting a 2.01 ERA in 62.2 innings with 67 strikeouts.  Doug has been working hard all offseason to get into form.  He has the stuff to be a frontline starter, and the team is very eager to see him back on the mound in 2013.

Another big time arm the Dirtbags are proud to announce is the addition of Iona Gael righthander Mo Rivera.  Rivera is another former Iona Prep standout who will see time near the top of the rotation.  He’s pitched 30.2 innings so far in his freshman season, striking out 12 and walking only 12.  Rivera has pinpoint control and the team will count on him for important innings as a starter this summer.

The team’s most recent acquisition to the pitching staff is hard throwing righthander Willis Robbins.  Another Rye native, Robbins is currently in his freshman year at Columbia University.  As a senior in 2012, Robbins posted a 2.29 ERA with 77 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched.  Robbins has the potential to be a crucial power arm the team will need this season, and expect to see him get time as both a starter and a reliever.

Come out to see the Dirtbags start up its 2013 season on Sunday, March 26th at Mercy College against the Hastings Lookouts.
