Dirtbags Set Single Season League Home Run Record With 17

Jul. 13th, 2012

Rob Ambrosino

The New Rochelle Dirtbags have set a new Westchester/Rockland Wood Bat League home run record with 17, passing the previous record of 16 set by the Pleasantville Red Sox in 2005. Cristian Fiorito slugged a go ahead grand slam on July 8th against the Cavaliers to give the club the record. The team still has six games left on their 2012 schedule.

Rookie phenoms Donato Signore and Cristian Fiorito are top two in the league in homers. The team’s leadoff hitter Signore currently leads everyone with 5 home runs and cleanup hitter Fiorito is right behind him with 4. Designated hitter Dave McCorison and first baseman Kevin Coogan both have 3 home runs, while outfielders Mike Maschi and Anthony Muccio have one each. Surprisingly, the team had just one home run in each of their previous two years. Their first was in the franchise’s first game on May 20th, 2010 against the Blue Devils when catcher Matt Iacopetta went deep to left field at Suffern Rec. The team didn’t hit another one until July 13th, 2011, when outfielder Tom O’Neill hit a game winning home run at Germonds Park against the Rockland Cavaliers.

Dean Lambert pitched 5 strong innings for the win, striking out 7 while allowing just one unearned run. In the 8-4 victory, Kevin Coogan, Dave McCorison, and Donato Signore all hit home runs.

After going up 8-3 over the Wilton Warriors on Saturday, July 7th at Salesian HS, the team allowed 7 runs in the 7th inning and eventually fell by a score of 13-8. Coogan hit his third home run of the season, and Anthony Muccio and Eric Robinson both got two hits in the loss.

Rob Ambrosino was domainant In game one of a Sunday doubleheader with the Rockland Cavaliers. The Iona College righthander threw a complete game shutout, striking out 7 and walking one while allowing just 4 hits. Ambrosino mowed down the Cavs, needing just 94 pitches to complete the game in just an hour and 45 minutes.

Game two of the doubleheader saw the Dirtbags come back from a 2-0 deficit to win in extra innings by a score of 6-4. In the top of 6th inning, Cristian Fiorito hit a grand slam to put the ‘Bags ahead 4-2. After the Cavs tied it up in the bottom half of the inning, Tyler Gurman came in to throw 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit. In the top of the 9th Anthony Muccio and Gurman hit back to back doubles to put the team ahead for good before Dave McCorison drove in Muccio with the sixth and final run.

The team traveled up to Wilton HS to face the Danbury Barons on Tuesday, July 10th. A game that featured a lot of baserunners, the team was behind 15-10 in the middle of the 6th inning when the game was suspended due to the lights set to shut off on a timer at 11:30 pm. Offensive stars of the game were Jimmy Foley, who went 2 for 3 with a triple, a single, and 3 rbi’s. Catcher Craig Bruno went 1 for 3 with a double and 2 rbi’s.

Thursday night, July 12th, Chris Mentrasti returned to the mound and threw 7 strong innings, allowing just one earned run in a 10-5 win over the New York Finest at Rumbrook Park. Mentrasti also hit a three run double and stole a pair of bags. Cristian Fiorito and Greg Locke both had two hits in the victory.

Come support the team as they continue their season this Saturday, July 14th with a 2 pm game against the Somers Cyclones at Salesian HS.
