The Dirtbags continued their strong start to the 2012 season, splitting a doubleheader with the second year Rockland Astros before falling in midweek contest to the Connecticut Warriors and taking a single game from the New York Bears. In five games this season, the ‘Bags have scored 35 runs.

On Sunday, May 27th, the Dirtbags lost a heartbreaker in game one to the Rockland Astros, 8-7 at Albertus Magnus HS. A pair of Iona College righthanders made their season debuts, as Pete Ladis pitched 3 innings and Rob Ambrosino threw 3 2/3 in the loss. Dave McCorison provided much of the offense, going 4 for 4 with a home run to the opposite field. Left fielder Jimmy Foley knocked 3 hits and Greg Locke was 2 for 4 including a double off the right field fence.

Game two of the doubleheader saw the ‘Bags fall behind 5-0 in the first inning after a few tough plays didn’t go their way. However, lefthander Dan Sorine would only give up 3 hits in the following four innings to get his first win as a Dirtbag. Sorine struck out 8 on the day. John Bivas and Ryan Fedak both retired the side in order in the last two innings, with Fedak getting his second save of the year. Offensively, Donato Signore got the bats going with a huge 3 run home run over the left field fence in the 3rd before the team would add on an additional run to make it 5-4. After scoring a run in the 4th inning on a wild pitch, second baseman Sean Lafaye would drive in two runs to give New Rochelle the lead for good. They would end up winning the game 8-5.

Wednesday night the ‘Bags traveled up to Wilton, Connecticut to play the first year Connecticut Warriors. Dean Lambert made his 2012 debut on the mound, and threw 4 innings, striking out 5 and allowing 4 earned. John Bivas pitched three strong innings, allowing only one hit and striking out three. Centerfielder Mike Maschi returned from his school season at Fairfield to spark the lineup, going 2 for 4 with a double and an rbi. The reigning gold glove winner also made an incredible diving catch, robbing Connecticut’s Alex Rough of extra bases in the 6th. First baseman Cristian Fiorito went 2 for 4 with an rbi and a run scored. After going up 1-0 in the first inning, the Warriors came back to score 5 in the next few innings and would eventually win the game by a score of 6-4.

Saturday, June 2nd, the team would take on the New York Bears at the brand new turf facility at Stepinac HS. Chris Mentrasti once again was brilliant on the mound, throwing a complete game shutout, striking out 5 and walking none in 6 innings. The Dirtbags took the lead 2-0 on a 2 run home run by Mike Maschi to right center in the second. After scoring a run in the 4th, the ‘Bags blew the game open in the 5th. Kevin Coogan started the inning off with a deep home run to right center. Later, Cristian Fiorito would knock in three runs with a double off the right field fence. After leading 8-0, Anthony Muccio hit a towering grand slam to right to make the score 12-0. Mentrasti would shut the game down in the bottom of the 6th to win, inducing a 5-4-3 double play from Eric Robinson, to Lafaye, to Fiorito to end it on the 10 run rule.
